Rising striker Luka Jovanović delivered another defining moment in his breakout season, scoring an 87th-minute winner to seal a 2–1 comeback victory for Adelaide United over Sydney FC in Round 17 of the A-League Men.
The 20-year-old forward, wearing the No. 9 shirt, once again demonstrated why he is fast becoming one of the league’s most exciting young talents. His late strike not only secured three crucial points for the Reds but also strengthened their push up the table.
Sydney FC opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Tiago Quintal, capitalising on early pressure and energising the home crowd. But Adelaide’s response was immediate. Just four minutes later, Ryan Kitto levelled the contest with a well-taken finish, shifting momentum back toward the visitors.
The match settled into a tense, end-to-end battle. Sydney enjoyed spells of possession, while Adelaide looked dangerous on the counterattack. As the clock ticked toward full time, it appeared both sides might settle for a point.
In the 87th minute, Jovanović pounced on a defensive lapse and calmly slotted home the winner, silencing the Sydney supporters and sparking jubilant celebrations among the travelling fans. It was a poacher’s goal, instinctive clinical, and emblematic of a striker brimming with confidence.
With the goal, Jovanović moves to five league goals in the 2025-26 campaign, adding to his three assists in what has been his most productive senior season to date. Having progressed through Adelaide United’s youth system before making his A-League debut in 2022, the Adelaide-born forward is now leading the line with maturity beyond his years.
His recent form has established him as Adelaide’s primary attacking threat and one of the club’s most reliable contributors in front of goal. At just 20, he continues to build on his experience with Australia’s youth national teams while developing into a key figure at the club level.
The victory lifts Adelaide United further up the A-League standings and reinforces their credentials as serious finals contenders. More importantly, it underlines the growing influence of their young striker.
For Luka Jovanović, nights like this are becoming a habit, and if his trajectory continues, this may only be the beginning of a much larger story.
